European HR Director, circa €150,000, Brussels base, no shortage of challenges
This multinational employer is seeking a leader with significant international experience & well-rounded HR expertise, ideally with direct exposure across multiple markets, and preferably who has lived and worked regularly outside of their home country to ideally have a deeper understanding of international commerce and culture.
Supporting both regional and global Executive teams, this person will be setting HR strategy for a speciality manufacturing business in growth mode, whilst tailoring HR initiatives for international consistency and fit to local nuances. This organisation has a particularly complex matrix structure, and many niche skilled, long serving leaders; so exceptional collaboration skills and Board level savvy will be essential for gaining respect and cooperation to achieve results.
There is a small team of HR managers who provide corporate HR support, and HR Managers who work directly with plant General Managers within the region, so the ability to mentor and develop functional team members will be critical, especially in instances where “dotted” reporting lines apply.
The growth within the business has been consistent, but many of the HR frameworks haven’t kept up with that pace, so there are a number of programmes that need to be revamped and refreshed (and sometimes built from scratch!) across areas inclusive of succession planning, talent development, workforce diversity, career pathways, international mobility and more.
The regional leadership team will benefit from executive coaching. Advising on organizational design and culture harmonization will also be high priorities for this person. Ongoing growth is predicted through new product development, and acquisitions – so expertise with M&A due diligence and harmonisation will be highly regarded, as will be experience in supporting the opening of new markets.
This person will need to have a flair for talent attraction, development and retention - these are key on the leadership agenda given the company is operating in a globally competitive market with a unique blend of workforce types, inclusive of internationally scarce skilled professionals.
This is a high-profile role, and success will certainly provide many ongoing development & progression opportunities within the corporation around the world. English is the company language but business fluent French will be extremely useful, and any additional languages will be highly regarded. A strong track record for influencing via data, gaining credibility through measurable ROI initiatives, and having courage of conviction for organisational design and culture change projects will be essential for success in this role.
We will be particularly interested in HR professionals who offer:
tenured but clearly ambitious careers within complex matrix international employers;
a history of owning HR strategy design and implementation accountability within standalone P&L business units and/or companies;
extensive expertise with LEAN methodologies across full product life cycle companies within the manufacturing sector.
Given the executive appetite for career development within the company, preference will be given to professionals who continue to offer multi-continent mobility as part of their career progression; and who have worked outside of the HR function in operational business roles.
This role will ideally be based from (or attending weekly) a Brussels location given this is where key execs are situated. A base salary of circa €150,000 will apply along with a healthy bonus, package benefits and relocation support if required.
This is a salaried, career role that will require current EU citizenship. Regular, planned travel can be expected across Europe, and occasional travel can be expected across other continents.
