CHRO - high tech, fast growth, quasi startup - USA

ROLE FILLED - HIGH PERFORMANCE LEADER COMMENCED AFTER SUCCESSFUL EMPLOYMENT CONTRACT OFFER

Whilst operating as a stand-alone legal and financial entity, this organization is a spin-off from a larger global parent and is viewed as an incubator for developing “future life” technology - truly cutting edge solutions to key global issues.

Now at 150 employees, (including some of the best engineering specialists in their fields globally) the existing C-suite members have an appetite to appoint their first CHRO - a “been there, got the t-shirt” level of experience professional, who will be pivotal to the aggressive growth and global expansion plans of the organization.

This HR leader will offer a first-hand understanding of the pressures typical to a young, quasi startup business; and will be experienced in building robust frameworks that are scaleable and adjustable for constant change as the business expands and matures, and strategic priorities evolve. Ideally, this person will also have a history of having worked in multinational, complex matrix organizations - to understand what best practices to aim for (and avoid), given the growth agenda for the company.

This CHRO will be committed to defining and instilling sustainable cultural values - this groundwork will be pivotal to company success, particularly in attracting, engaging, and retaining the best minds in this very new field of technology. In addition, the organizational design principles and operating practices implemented today will be critical in driving innovation, leveraging growth, and profitability.

As the coach and sparring partner to colleagues in the C-suite, this person will have a natural ability to mesh leadership teams, ensuring ongoing collaboration, and aiding highly accomplished individuals to be better leaders of people.

PhD’s abound in this workforce, and stakeholders will best be influenced by data and factual reasoning, rather than emotion, so this leader will need to be comfortable with analytics and “technical talk”. Certainly, a key challenge will be fostering ongoing creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurialism; tempered with the requirements of a regulatory environment with heavy compliance needs.

This organization is well resourced although aggressive plans for growth are likely to be organic, with a focus on new product development, and the opening of new markets internationally. Because they are amongst the first in their field, they will continue to experience many “new” challenges, and another key focus for this CHRO will be on talent management - how to apply transferable skills within the company; how to “grow” specialist technical experts by cross-pollinating knowledge and intellectual property; how to affordably attract, motivate and retain professionals with globally scarce expertise.

With a small HR team in place, this CHRO will know how to apply maximum value with limited resources, whilst also knowing the trigger points for HR function expansion. With a strong breadth and depth of general HR knowledge, this person could add extra value in having historically also undertaken specialist roles in Compensation & Benefits, or HR technology, or leadership development.

Our ideal executive leader will offer:

  • a work history that spans private sector hyper-growth startup companies in addition to “best in class” multinational corporations

  • a track record of building, developing and inspiring business leadership and HR teams across multiple continents

  • extensive first-hand experience in supporting globally scarce, niche skilled, STEM workforces

  • exceptional commercial acumen (and the ability to read a P&L and interpret a balance sheet will be tested as part of the hiring process)

  • fluent verbal and written English language skills that enable successful Board level presentations

  • a keen interest and curiosity in science, engineering and future technologies

A stable, salaried career history that shows clear career progression and professional development will be well regarded. Unfortunately, career contractors will not be considered at this time. No work visa sponsorship is available so current US citizenship or a valid US green card is essential.

Whilst some flexibility can be offered on base location, this is not a remote work role - and with key stakeholders currently working out of Washington DC, this CHRO will preferably join them in that location. Post-Covid restrictions, this person can expect regular, planned travel across the USA, Europe and Asia, so a current passport and Covid vaccinations will be essential. We have flex on salary with a six-figure USD base salary + exec bonus & benefits package + relocation support within the USA.

If this sounds like the challenge you've been seeking for your next career move, please do make contact directly and in confidence via solutions@cartermorris.com quoting CMTS00268. Interviews are being scheduled currently, with a view to an employment offer being extended in the coming weeks.
