HR Director - flex UK location, reporting to CEO

ROLE FILLED - HIGH PERFORMANCE LEADER COMMENCED AFTER SUCCESSFUL EMPLOYMENT CONTRACT OFFER

We are seeking a pragmatic, commercially-minded HR Executive for this long-established charity enterprise, to join a recently appointed CEO in rethinking and reshaping the future of this mission-driven organisation.

Minimal investment has been made historically into people strategies and frameworks, on the basis that “everything works so let it manage itself” - a perfectly acceptable approach when the organisation was younger and smaller, but an approach that is no longer working given the growth of the enterprise and accompanying complexity of services now being provided to a range of external stakeholders.

The CEO has a history of partnering with “value add” HR leaders in previous roles, and seeks that type of expertise and thought leadership again, with an additional agenda to help inspire and develop a relatively inexperienced management team. This HR executive will be relied upon heavily by many as a HR subject matter expert, risk management consultant and a role model leader to promote and educate a people agenda that will enable this enterprise to continue to build on its historic success.

Immediate priorities for this role will include a need to:

  • inspire and upskill a HR team that has had limited professional development and limited role modelling on what “great HR” should be involved in to enable company success

  • design and deliver on talent management and reward strategies in order to attract and retain niche skilled talent in a highly competitive market

  • design and deliver on performance management frameworks - just because this isn’t a private sector company, doesn’t mean that a “near enough is good enough” culture is acceptable, especially when the services provided occur in a heavily regulated and publicly scrutinised environment

  • build and implement performance management frameworks to drive the desired behaviours and enable fairness and quality of staff development to accurately meet client needs

Above all, this HR leader should be tackling all upgrading, change and transformation, with the passion and ethics that are integral to a mission driven charitable organisation. With a base salary of circa £100,000 and limited benefits, this isn’t a role for the professional motivated by their own financial wellbeing - fundamentally this HR leader will need to wholeheartedly believe in investing their expertise for the benefit of the greater good!

The role requires fluent written & spoken English. A direct history in working with health or social care enterprises will prove invaluable for understanding the nuances of regulations and compliance within this company’s industry. Given the scope of the role and the challenges to be addressed, this possibly isn’t a role ideal to a HR executive who has enjoyed a purely private sector career….

Other critical hiring criteria includes:

  •  A stable career history that shows continued professional development

  • A track record of being able to “fly the plane whilst building it” - and more specifically juggling the hands on demands of operational priorities with thinking and planning for structures and processes that will actually reduce the operational workload and allow HR teams to focus on higher value service delivery

  • An analytical mind-set with data savvy; able to influence through facts and data, rather than simply emotions

  • An advanced commercial acumen with an ability to measure ROI through your interventions to date

  • Fine attention to detail in the creation of processes, programmes and reporting tools to track, assess and review ER issues

  • Ability to adjust your communications and presentations style to an array of stakeholders

  • You’ll need gravitas, with the courage to influence and stand your ground whilst demonstrating a high degree of emotional intelligence

This should be a highly rewarding role for the HR professional who has “been there, done that” but still wants to continue working to apply their expertise within an organisation that is literally helping the lives of others across the UK and/or for the HR professional who has strong technical and team leadership skills and would like to again apply them within a setting that is focussed on improving opportunities and welfare of disadvantaged community members over purely improving company and shareholder profits.

The role will require a current UK residency status and UK citizenship with a preference for professionals already based within England - apologies but we have no options for work visa sponsorships nor relocation support. Post Covid restrictions, planned and regular travel can be expected across key hubs in England.
